BANGOR – Congressman Bruce Poliquin has nominated 18 students from Maine’s 2nd District to attend one of the nation’s military service academies next year.
Local students include:
* Joseph Baumann of Leeds, Leavitt Area High School, U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Military Academy;
* Rebekah Bryant of Monmouth, Monmouth Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy;
* Todd Gustaitis, of Otisfield, Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, U.S. Military Academy;
* Chase Harkins of Bethel, Gould Academy, U.S. Military Academy;
* Emma Knapp of Fryeburg, Vicenza American High School, U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Military Academy;
* Anna Lastra of Fryeburg, Fryeburg Academy, U.S. Military Academy and U.S. Naval Academy;
* Steven Minns of Wilton, Mount Blue High School, U.S. Military Academy; and
* Scott Pierce of Auburn, Buckfield High School, U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Air Force Academy.
To be considered for appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by a member of Congress or other authorized nominating source. Poliquin made the nominations based on the recommendations of the Service Academy Nomination Advisory Board, which personally interviewed applicants.
Students who received nomination will be candidates to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.
The 2016 application period for 2nd Congressional District students seeking nomination to a military service academy will open next May.
