Also, I was told of another accident from an old timer from South Paris. It involved an interurban electric train, which ran between South Paris and Norway across a bog in north Norway. This train ran off the track and into the bog. I tramped the bog years ago and did not see any evidence of such incident. Sure do love these stories.

Regarding the inquiry on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, about HAARP: It was quite interesting to me to see that 92-year-old D.F. from Mexico submitted the request for information. HAARP does fall in a rather unusual subject for the casual reader. I Googled HAARP and was surprised to find Hydroacoustic Data Systems paper No. 539, dated Dec. 27, 2012. It included a HAARP location on Ascension Island, south Atlantic Ocean. The paper was accompanied by a video.

Wow! I arrived on Ascension Island with Pan-American Airways Inc. Guided Missiles Range Division in April 1966 and stayed until 1971. The paper on the web described a different island than what I experienced and I had to laugh at what was described. I was on Ascension for five years, revisited in 1997 and plan on another visit in 2016. I was on the island when BBC Relay Station was being constructed from 1966-67 and the electronic equipment the paper’s author details is in fact a fresh water supply line.

As for the ionospheric research program, that sort of research has been going on for many years by the Army. I was also stationed on San Salvador Island, Bahamas, in the Navy and later with Pan-Am from 1961 to 1963, and during those years, there was a small building with ionospheric testing equipment operated by the Army technicians house at the Pan-Am base. The purpose was to bounce an electronic signal from the equipment off the ionosphere and record the time traveled up and back. This information was provided to our government 24/7/365 and shared by all. Same sort of information conducted by HAARP, but perhaps from a different sort of test equipment. — Regards, Doug R.

RESPONSE: Your letter was edited to fit this space. Thanks for your perspective and information on these topics. Sun Spots enjoys reading about the unusual, too, and hopes that readers continue to share their thoughts on subjects that others will find helpful.

From Wikipedia: “HAARP is an ionospheric research program jointly funded by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the University of Alaska and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Designed and built by BAE Advanced Technologies, its purpose is to analyze the ionosphere and investigate the potential for developing ionospheric enhancement technology for radio communications and surveillance.”
