1921 – 2016

HEBRON — Bertha W. Smith, 94, of Huntington, Vt., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at her daughter’s home in Hebron.

Bertha was born in Alburg, Vt., on March 16, 1921, the daughter of Edson Jason and Nita Jane (Reynolds) Washburn. She attended local schools, graduating from Burlington High School. She then attended and graduated from Mary Fletcher School of Nursing in 1944.

Bertha did private-duty nursing in the Burlington, Vt., area. She was active in starting the Huntington Grade School hot lunch program in addition to helping the sick in her neighborhood.

She married Felix Smith of Huntington, Vt., in March 1944. He died in 1989.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane A. Williams and her husband, Lewis, of Hebron, and Katherine Smith of Huntington, Vt.; a son-in-law, Bryce Massie of Keene, N.H.; five grandchildren, Amanda Norwood, Steven Williams, Peter Massie, Christina Barr and Erika Gleason; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Bertha is predeceased by a daughter, Phyllis Massie.
