1925 – 2016

AUGUSTA — Frank Allain passed away on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the VA Hospital at Togus in Augusta.

He was born on March 1, 1925, in Madison, a son of Ferdinand and Eleanor (Poirier) Allain. He married Shirley Monroe on May 14, 1949. They adopted two children, Bruce, who died in an auto accident at the age of 19 and Jean who resides and is employed in Denver, Colo.

Frank served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot and lieutenant in World War II. He was employed as a clerk in the Madison post office, promoted to postal inspector, serving in Pennsylvania and Boston, Mass. At the time of his retirement, he held the title of mail fraud coordinator for New England.

In 1999, he established a scholarship fund at Madison High School in his son’s name. He also helped relatives financially with emphasis on those seeking a higher education or job training.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife and visiting England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, as well as about 45 of the United States. He enjoyed golf and still walked at age 90. He shot his best round (73) at Lakewood at age 80, had his third hole in one at 81 and won the presidents cup at 83.

He is survived by a daughter, Jean Allain; and brother, Ernest; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Shirley; his son, Bruce; brothers, Arthur, Henry and Roland; and sisters, Alice, Annie, Angeline and Marian.
