Mystery Photo for January 24, 2016
Many entrants for last week’s mystery photo mentioned they have seen the fighting moose display at the flagship store of L.L. Bean in Freeport many times. A description of “The Final Charge” found online states: The State of Maine Locked Moose Antler Project began in the spring of 2006 when a woman named Adella Johnson found the remains of two bull moose on her property in New Sweden. Game wardens investigated the remains and determined that the two bulls became locked in battle during the rut the previous fall and eventually perished. Wardens recovered the skulls and antlers, which have never been separated. Johnson chose to donate the antlers to be used by the state for educational purposes. Partnering with L.L. Bean, who sponsored the project, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife worked with taxidermist Mark Dufresne of Natures Reflection Taxidermy to create a full mount of the battling bull moose. Chosen in a random drawing of nearly 100 entrants was Ronnie Hutchinson of Carthage. Hutchinson is the winner of a $10 Subway gift card.
