AUGUSTA (AP) — Law enforcement officials say an Augusta murder suspect who died after hanging herself inside her jail cell this week was not believed to be a significant threat to herself.
The Kennebec Journal reported (http://bit.ly/1Vv07yl ) Interim Sheriff Ryan Reardon said Zina Fritze was placed on a “lower form of observation” that was based on her interactions with mental health professionals at the Kennebec County Jail.
Reardon says the 27-year-old was checked on every 15 minutes.
Fritze and two others were charged in the Nov. 23 death of 31-year-old Joseph Marceau. She was found hanging by a bed sheet by a corrections officer Wednesday, about 24 hours after she was arraigned at the Capital Judicial Center.
Fritze was pronounced dead while being transported to MaineGeneral Medical Center.
