WATERVILLE (AP) — Waterville officials have voted to sell a downtown city-owned lot to Colby College so the school can build a dormitory there.

The Morning Sentinel reported (http://bit.ly/1PzapNY ) city councilors voted unanimously Tuesday to sell the land for $300,000. The council must vote again to finalize the sale.

The land purchase is part of Colby’s ongoing effort to redevelop the downtown area. The college has bought several vacant downtown buildings and is seeking investors to develop the properties.

Councilors also voted to adopt a downtown revitalization strategy developed at meetings held last year.

Some business owners urged the council to delay the vote on the land sale until a traffic study of the downtown is completed in July. Residents say a parking garage is needed downtown.
