Maine 3, Merrimack 2
ORONO — It was Seniors Night at Alfond Arena but it was a pair of freshmen who stole the show in overtime for the University of Maine men’s hockey team.
Danny Perez’s goal off the rebound of a Rob Michel point shot with 3:11 left in overtime gave the Black Bears a wild 3-2 triumph over Merrimack College Saturday night at Alfond Arena.
Maine had taken a 2-0 lead on third-period goals by Steven Swavely and Cam Brown but the Warriors forced overtime by scoring two goals with goalie Drew Vogler pulled in favor of an extra attacker.
But Perez camped out in front of the net and when Michel’s 40-foot wrister spilled over to him, he swept it home.
Maine snapped a five-game losing streak and eight-game Alfond Arena winless skein (0-6-2). Maine is now 8-20-6 overall, 5-13-2 in Hockey East, while Merrimack fell to 9-16-7 and 3-10-7.
