NEWRY — Residents will vote on a $763,000 municipal budget at their annual town meeting Tuesday, March 8.

The meeting will kick off at 7 p.m. at the Bear River Grange Hall, and will be preceded by a potluck supper at 6 p.m.

Election of a moderator, a selectman/assessor/overseer of the poor, and a School Administrative District 44 director will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, March 7, at the Town Office.

Selectman Gary Wight and school director Whitney Gray are seeking re-election, an official said.

One article asks residents to raise and appropriate $10,000 for a reserve account to build a veterans memorial.

Board Chairman Gary Wight said at a previous meeting that the town has memorial plaques recognizing veterans of World War II, but it doesn’t list their names or the names of those who served in other wars.

“They also recognize World War II veterans, but say nothing about other wars,” Wight said. “I think that the names of all veterans should be on any new memorial we do, not just the names of veterans who served in wartime.”

The plaques are outside the Town Office.

Residents will also vote on whether to change the town’s fiscal year from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, to July 1 to June 30. The latter coincides with the school district and the state.

It is a nonbinding advisory vote designed to assist selectmen in exercising its authority to change the fiscal year, according to the article.
