1923 – 2016

AUBURN — Eugene A. St. Pierre, 92, of Auburn, loving husband of Teresa St. Pierre, died on Monday, March 7, in Auburn.

He was born in Lewiston on Oct. 18, 1923, the second of six children of Philippe and Gloria (Levesque) St. Pierre. Gene grew up on Blake Street in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the 531st Engineer Shore Regiment, 1st Engineer Special Brigade, U.S. Army. He landed on D­Day, June 6, 1944, on Utah Beach in Normandy, France.

After the war, he worked at People Savings Bank in Lewiston, from June 3, 1946, until his retirement in 1985, as chairman of the board and CEO of The Peoples Bank, Portland.

Gene married Teresa Ann Walmsley of Auburn on Jan. 10, 1948, at St. Patrick’s Church in Lewiston. They spent 68 happy years together. They raised three children, James, Lynn and Jeffrey in New Auburn.

He was a member of the former St. Patrick’s Church of Lewiston, a member of the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club since 1962, a trustee of the Auburn Public Library for 10 years and its treasurer for 5 years. He was also a member of the New Auburn American Legion Post No. 153, L’Association des Famille Saint­Pierre­Dessaint, Quebec, Canada, Androscoggin Land Trust and several other conservation organizations.

Gene was an accomplished watercolor artist, donating many of his paintings to auctions to benefit nonprofit organizations. He was also a lifelong outdoorsman and was member of the skeet club in Auburn for many years. He especially loved fishing, fly ­tying, bird hunting, photography and camping with his family.

In his later years, he became very interested in the history of World War II, reading many books and watching programs and writing of his experience in Europe.

Gene is survived by Teresa A. St. Pierre of Auburn? son, James A. St. Pierre of Brunswick? daughter, Lynn A. St. Pierre and her husband, Edward Cloutier, of Florida? grandson, Jamien A.S. St. Pierre of Bar Harbor? grandson, Jaaron A.S. Shaw and his fiancée, Lacaya Hoyt, of Readfield? brother, Raymond St. Pierre and his wife, Carmen, of Auburn? sister­-in-­law, Mary Godin of Auburn? brother-­in-­law, Daniel Lalonde of Lewiston? and and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey M. St. Pierre? his brother, E. Philip St. Pierre and his wife, Rita? his brother, Roger St. Pierre and his wife, Germaine? his sister, Sylvia Bernier and her husband, George? and his sister, Muriel Baylis and her husband, Edward.
