WELD — A Massachusetts man was killed in a single-car crash on School Street late Saturday night, according to a press release from State Police.

The investigation reported that Richard Rogers, 58, of Pembroke, Mass., lost control of his 2006 Honda Civic while he was traveling north in Route 156 in Weld. Rogers’ car drove onto the dirt shoulder of the roadway and then went into a spin, eventually crossing the centerline before it struck a large tree on School Street.

State troopers were called to the crash site at around 11:30 p.m.

According to the statement, Rogers died at the scene and his vehicles sustained massive damage to the rear.

Excessive speed and the possible presence of deer in or near the roadway are the likely cause of the crash, according to the statement.

Trooper Reid Bond of Troop C is the primary investigator in the crash and was assisted at the crash site by Cpl. Kevin Hartley of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Weld and Wilton fire departments also responded to the scene.
