AUBURN — Deputy Fire Chief Geoffrey Low said Tuesday the department is investigating why Engine No. 5 rolled off Center Street and onto private property a couple of weeks ago.
He said the department is looking at whether the wheels were chocked appropriately and whether the brakes weren’t set because of operator failure or a mechanical failure.
The engine was driven to an apartment complex on Center Street for a medical emergency. It rolled onto the lawn of a home next to the complex and had to be winched out by a wrecker, fire officials said.
There was no damage to the truck, Low said.
Low said that in his 20 years with the department, he hadn’t heard of a firetruck rolling away after it was parked.
Once the investigation is complete, Low said his department would report its findings to the City Council.
