Maine State Police say a Portland man was injured in Tuesday morning crash on Route 35 in Standish after a police chase.

The chase began in Freeport when Freeport Police said they saw 33-year-old Raymond Ireland — who was wanted on a number of charges. Ireland was driving a car overdue from Enterprise Car Rental, according to a statement from Maine Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Freeport Police started chasing the vehicle but broke off. State Troopers later spotted the vehicle on the Falmouth Spur of the Turnpike and started pursuit. They also broke off the pursuit because of Ireland’s erratic driving, according to McCausland’s statement.

The car was later seen in the Gorham-Standish area. Troopers and Cumberland County deputies chased the car on Route 35.

The chase ended when deputies put out spike mats that deflated the car’s tires. The car overturned near Woodrow Drive and came to rest on its wheels.

Ireland was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for non-life threatening injuries. Police say they plan to file charges from this morning’s once Ireland is released from the hospital.
