Utility crews are mopping up after a powerful windstorm knocked out electricity for tens of thousands of homes and businesses in Maine.

Gusts reached nearly 50 mph in some parts of Maine on Sunday, knocking down trees and limbs. At the peak, Central Maine Power alone had 31,000 customers in the dark.

But the winds died down Sunday night and utility crews worked through the night to restore power.

CMP was reporting 1,226 power outages late Monday morning, and Emera Maine had reduced the number of outages to a couple of dozen.

Southern New England was getting snow on Monday.

A winter weather advisory was in effect for southern New Hampshire, but southern Maine is expected to see an inch or snow.
