TOWNSHIP 10 — A man who was fishing at a chilly Maine pond when a car sailed over his head is being credited with saving the woman and her two young children who were inside.

State police say Leonard Wallace, of Steuben, rescued 38-year-old Mandi Parker, of Jonesboro, and her children, a 2-month-old and a 3-year-old.

Wallace was fishing at Fox Pond with his wife Saturday when the car went over their heads. State police say the 60-year-old man jumped into 48-degree water to retrieve a child in the backseat. Then he returned for the other child before helping the woman.

Troopers say Parker is charged with driving with a suspended driver’s license. The Associated Press couldn’t locate a phone number for her for comment.

Child welfare officials are caring for the children.
