1947 – 2016

LEWISTON — James A. Lamontagne of Lewiston, passed away on Saturday, April 2, after a long, but courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 27, 1947, in Rumford. James attended St. Mary’s Grade School, Lewiston High School and graduated from St. Francis College in Saco in 1969.

After spending two years in Paris, France, and working in Boston, Mass., at Chelsea Library as a library assistant for two years, he also spent time in Chicago and Texas before returning to Lewiston where he was employed at Bates College Library for 36 years cataloging books and films. James was also working on a new novel as reading and writing was a huge part of his life.

James was an enthusiastic hiker, looking forward each year to climb his favorite Mt. Katahdin which he undertook more than 30 times. He also enjoyed spending time on Mt. Washington and several other mountains in Maine and New Hampshire.

He was also a long standing member of the Central Maine Football Forecasters Association for 33 years, with seven championship titles. He was a devout Red Sox fan and also enjoyed local sports including Lewiston High School football games and attending his niece, Tracy’s softball games. He also enjoyed his time with his friends at Moosehead Lake.

James is survived by his sisters, Gloria Burgess and husband, Frank, Cecile Tobey, Linda Twitchell and Diane O’Leary and husband, Kevin; brothers, Joseph Lamontagne and wife, Sarah, and Philip Lamontagne and wife, Sandy. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

James is predeceased by his parents, Albert and Jeannette Lamontagne; his sister, Laura Bolduc; and his brother and best friend, Robert (Bucky) Lamontagne.
