1913 – 2016

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Yula Puiia passed away on Thursday, March 31, after a brief illness, at the age of 102 years old in Las Vegas, Nev., where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law for the past seven years.

Yula was born in Mexico to Guy and Rose (Russo) Fioroni. She was a graduate of Stephen High School in Rumford and was married to Carmelo Puiia for 64 years.

She was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Church in Rumford, until she moved to Las Vegas. She was a 70-year member of the church choir, starting as a teenager at St. Athanasius Church. She was a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a lifelong member of Napoleon Ouellette Post No. 24. She remained a member of the Daughters of Isabella for all her adult life.

She was a teacher at Hope School for eight years and was a member of the St. Rocco Society of the Garizia Lodge No. 467 (Sons of Italy) with her husband for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Eleanor and husband, Jerry Carrier, of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren, Pam Cook of Wayne, Brian Carrier of Las Vegas, Nev., Jason Carrier of Old Lyme, Conn., Michael Puiia of Mechanic Falls, and Kristen (Puiia) Hazeltine of Lewiston; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carmelo; son, Richard Puiia; brother, John Fioroni; and sister, Mary Theberge.
