YORK, Maine — A nonprofit group that provided more than a million pounds of food every year to needy families in southern Maine has abruptly closed.
The Portland Press-Herald reports Food Rescue of York County had to close after losing access to three-quarters of the food it distributed.
The nonprofit group distributed food to more than 45 food pantries and meal programs.
The organization’s chairwoman of the board of directors, Karen Boisvert, says it lost a state contract to distribute food from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She says the group also lost food when a Shaw’s supermarket warehouse in Wells moved frozen food operations out of state.
A spokeswoman for Shaw’s says the company is sad to learn of Food Rescue’s closing and will ensure that its grocery donations continue.
