FRYEBURG — A Conway, N.H., man was arrested Sunday on charges of robbing a local convenience store, according to news release by the Fryeburg Police Department.

John Chilafoe, 36, was arrested without incident at his Conway home by Fryeburg and Conway police officers.

According to police, Chilafoe entered the On the Run convenience store at 496 Main St., Fryeburg at around 1 p.m. Sunday, approached the clerk behind the counter and asked her to give him the contents of the cash register.

The clerk stated that she refused to hand over the cash, so he went behind the counter and removed the cash from the register.

He then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to the release.

Fryeburg police officers were notified by the store’s panic alarm, which was activated by the 57-year-old female clerk.

Authorities recovered the vehicle used by Chilafoe, according to the release.

“I am pleased we were able to bring the suspect to justice so quickly,” Fryeburg Police Chief Joshua Potvin said. “I credit the arrest to excellent police work between Conway and Fryeburg police officers.

“The clerk made an excellent eyewitness and was able to provide key descriptors,” he said.

The store was closed for several hours while officers processed the crime scene and collected physical evidence.
