FRYEBURG — Author Peter Kick will discuss his book “Desperate Steps: Life, Death, and Choices Made in the Mountains of the Northeast” at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center, 18 Bradley St.
The book recounts 20 tales of backcountry misadventure and misfortune, including incidents along the Appalachian Trail, and tells of the lessons learned in each.
Kick reports on the facts as they were known on the ground, with the help of firsthand accounts of victims, families, witnesses and search and rescue professionals. As each story unfolds, Kick and his sources offer a retrospective analysis to help readers discover for themselves what went wrong and how disasters, big and small, might be averted in the future.
Kick will also visit classes at Fryeburg Academy during his visit.
Admission to the evening program is free and open to the public.
