LEWISTON — A Lincoln Street neighborhood was roused by gunfire early Saturday as a fight led to shots fired outside an Oxford Street apartment house.

Police said multiple rounds were fired from a variety of guns. Several cars were struck by gunfire, including one that was occupied.

There were no reports of injuries in the 4 a.m. melee. Police were still interviewing witnesses and sorting out the details at noon.

The fracas awoke residents along Lincoln and Oxford streets as more than a dozen shots rang out.

“I heard rapid-sequence multiple shots a little after 4 a.m.,” one woman said. “Then I heard a female screaming something on the north side, or in the alley area. About 10 to 15 minutes later, I dared to open my door to peek. There were cops by then.”

Police Sgt. David Chick said the scrap began at 64 Oxford St. where several people had been lingering at the end of a party. A shot was fired and then several others followed. When police arrived, they found a crowd of people breaking up.

“People scattered,” Chick said.

Police cordoned off the area and began searching for spent rounds and other evidence. By sunrise, witnesses said it appeared at least 16 rounds had been found in and around a stairway along with a few spots of blood. It appeared at least one building was struck.

The building where the fight began is at the corner of Oxford and Chestnut streets.

Detective Roland Godbout was heading the investigation later Saturday. Charges were expected.
