RUMFORD — The Rumford Eagles will hold its annual Child Advocacy Day from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 7, giving children and their parents a chance to learn about personal safety.

Among the organizations participating are the Fire Department, the Police Department, the Greater Rumford Community Center, the Mexico Recreation Department and the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, Eagles member Fred Allen said. Fisher Agencies, a life insurance company in South Portland, will hand out free child safety kits.

“When kids go missing, the first thing the police do is attempt to gather as many details about the missing child as possible,” Allen said. “The child safety kit gives parents a chance to consolidate the information to make it easier for law enforcement to get the information.”

All money raised at the Child Advocacy Day will be split among several participating youth organizations, Allen said.

“It varies every year which youth organizations participate,” he said. “This year, it’s the GRCC, the Mexico Recreation Department, and the Boy and Girl Scouts. We split the money raised equally between any participating groups.”

Money is raised through donated raffle items from area businesses, bake sales, a 50/50 raffle, and a Chinese auction.

Child Advocacy Day has been in held in Rumford “for at least 10 years, but probably longer than that,” Allen said. “We’ve added different vendors and participants over the years. The most important thing we can do is make the event as good as possible for the town, so people can see what organizations are out there to protect our kids.”
