1917 – 2016

LEWISTON — Margaret Cheney Harrington, 98, formerly of Monmouth passed away Monday, May 2, at Marshwood Center in Lewiston.

She was born June 2, 1917, in Biddeford, the daughter of Irville and Gladys (Umberhind) Cheney. She grew up in Monmouth, living at Highmoor Farm where her father was the superintendent. A graduate of Monmouth Academy, Margaret then attended the University of Maine and received a degree in nursing. Her class was the first class to obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Maine. As a registered nurse, she worked in hospitals and doctors’ offices. She also did private-duty nursing and worked for the Tuberculosis Association. She finished her career as a social worker for homebound patients and those in nursing facilities. Her caring acts and good deeds were many. Margaret’s moral code dictated that she was “on call” for those she served and her contributions to their lives were significant and sincere.

On June 14, 1944, she married Joseph L. Harrington of Patten. Throughout their married life, they lived in North Carolina, Maine, Texas, Ohio, New Jersey and Michigan. In 1977, they returned to Monmouth to live in the Cheney family home until Joseph passed away in 2009.

Margaret led a full life. She enjoyed bowling, tennis, golf, camping, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, bridge and cooking. Apple pies were her specialty.

Margaret is survived by her five children, James Harrington his wife, Sally, of Portage, Mich., Warren Harrington and his wife, Lucia, of Marquette, Mich., Vicki Banton and her husband, Craig, of Cumberland Center, Rita Rivers and husband, Ronald, of Auburn, Wash., and Paula Miller of Palatka, Fla. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, John, Peter, Robert, Christen, Kelly, Stacia, Ryan, Tyler and Dylan; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her parents; and her brother, James.

The family would like to thank the employees of Marshwood Center for the loving care they gave Margaret these last seven years.
