1934 – 2016

HARTFORD — Roland B. Fisher, formerly of Augusta, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 13 with family at his side after a long bout with lung cancer.

Roland was born on his father’s dairy farm, Maplewood Dairy, in Augusta on June 20, 1934. He was always grateful for being a farm boy helping to tend the animals. His love of animals continued throughout his life. He was educated in the Augusta school system and was a graduate of Cony High, class of 1952.

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp shortly after the Korean Peace Treaty was signed and was honorably discharged as sergeant in 1956. He worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as a debit agent in Augusta, was promoted to sales manager and moved his family to Jay. Roland managed a sales team covering Livermore Falls, Farmington, Kingfield and Rumford, which received honor club status several times in the years to follow.

He retired from MetLife after 30 years of service and worked for the Maine State Bureau of Insurance for several years as a senior insurance analyst. After retirement from the state, he continued to work at the Bureau on a part-time basis for several more years as a contract examiner. Roland loved his time at the Bureau of Insurance, working into his 70’s.

In his younger days, he loved to hunt and fish, and earned his private pilot’s license, enjoying flying around Maine and New Hampshire. After retirement, Roland and his wife turned their camp on Little Bear Pond into a full-time residence, where he enjoyed gardening, riding in his pontoon boat, canoeing, fishing and his natural surroundings listening for the return of the Loons and the activity of Camp Wekeela each year.

His family is deeply grateful to Cheryl, Tammy, Michelle and Nicole of Androscoggin Hospice and Helen and Dr. Austin at Hospice House who cared for our precious “Bobo” in his final days with compassion and tenderness.

Roland was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Isabelle Fisher of Augusta; and sister, Gloria Sanborn of Woodbridge, Va.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and best friend, Sylvia Violette Fisher; their daughter, Rhonda Fisher and her partner, Earle Conklin, of Portland, Ore.; sons, Doug Fisher and wife, Sherry, of Winthrop and Brian Fisher and his wife, Maura, of Kingsport, Tenn. He is also survived by his pride and joy, his three grandsons, Corbin Fisher of Augusta, Darren Fisher of Portland and Noah Fisher Brown, of San Francisco, Calif.
