1926 – 2016

LISBON FALLS — Joan Elizabeth Hammes, born Dec. 7, 1926, in South Bend, Ind., died at her home in Lisbon Falls on Monday, May 16.

Joan was married in 1952 to Paul Hammes of LaCrosse, Wis. She was raised Methodist but after her marriage became a Catholic. They have five children, Christine of San Antonio, Texas, Barbara of Indianapolis, Ind., Nina of Lewiston, James of Mooresville, Ind., and Sybilla Pettingill of Lisbon Falls.

She was a member of the Order of Carmelites Discalced Secular and a member of the Rosary Society. She loved singing and was a cantor at Sacred Heart Church and Our Lady of Lourdes in Indianapolis, Ind.

She lived in Kokomo, Ind., for four years and cared for her uncle, J. Lewis Schanbacher. While in Kokomo, Ind., she attended the Methodist Church with her uncle, and attended St. Patrick Catholic Church, where she was also a cantor.

In 1995, Joan went to live in Topsham and then made her home with her youngest daughter, Sybilla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; grandson, Lance; and brother, Ralph. She is survived by her four daughters; her son and his wife, Deanna; her son-in-law, Tim; her sister, Margaret Glassley (who recently lost her husband, Robert) of Westville, Ind.; also four grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
