TURNER — Jason Brooks did it all for the Maranacook Black Bears. The senior had two hits at the plate, and when he made an out, it was a productive out.

He came into pitch to close out the 6-3 victory over the Leavitt Hornets in KVAC baseball action.

“He’s a senior captain, he (has) the leadership skills and that’s what we needed him to do,” Maranacook coach Eric Brown said. “He comes through for us all the time. He’s a great player.”

Brooks opened the scoring with a two-run double that short hopped the fence in left field, scoring the Mark Buzzell and Max McQuillen, who each got on base with walk. Leavitt starter Brian Hewitt settled down as he sat down the next three batters in the inning.

“Getting the offense going is really important,” Jason Brooks said. “A lot of times, we wait until the third or fourth inning to get going, but if we can start the offense going in the first inning, it puts us ahead the rest of the game.”

The Hornets (6-7) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Zack Dymond and Julian Kirouac each reached base on infield error. Lucas Perry brought them home with a two-run double of his own to tie the game. He came home as Chad Morin followed up with a double.

“We were able to get a few things going. I thought we hit some balls hard,” Leavitt coach Chris Cifelli said. “That’s part of it, we squared them up a little bit. (Maranacook starter Avery Beckwith) settled down and we didn’t do that as much going forward. I thought our first at bats were good.”

The Black Bears (7-5) took the lead for good in the top of the third inning when Brooks reached on an infield error and was awarded second base when the throw went out of play. After moving to third on a ground out, he scored on Chris Florek’s sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game. Dan Garland reached base with two outs with a single. Kent Mohlar brought him home from second after Matt Gyorgy’s single put Garland at second.

In the top of the fourth, Buzzell led off with a single that ended Brian Hewitt’s day on the mound. Hewitt allowed six hits in three plus innings. Kirouac came in relief, allowing Max McQuillen to single. Brooks moved the runners into scoring position, while Connor Ireland brought home Buzzell on a 5-3 putout and McQuillen scored on a Florek single for the 6-3 lead.

Leavitt’s bats woke up in the bottom half of the inning as Christian Callahan led the inning off with a single. Nick Angello flew out to short right and Callahan was doubled up sliding back into first. The next three hitters all reached base. Kirouac grounded out at second base to end the inning.

“That was huge to get out of that (jam),” Brown said. “We needed to get past that one and we did. We got the come backer to the pitcher and he got the job done.”

Cifelli liked how his team never gave up.

“I liked our fight today,” Cifelli said. “We had a lot of opportunities offensively and defensively that could have gone south, but instead we fought and gave ourselves a fighting shot at the end of the game.”

Avery Beckwith picked up the win on the mound as he went four innings as Jared Beckwith came in relief in the fifth. Avery only allowed five hits. Leavitt left a man on third in the bottom of the sixth while Brooks came in the seventh to close as he set down the Hornets 1-2-3.

“Oh yeah, it’s great to let no on base, just to get out of there as quick as possible,” Brooks said of shutting down a team down order.
