1931 – 2016

AUGUSTA — Carl Joseph Rand passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 22, after an epic, 25-year battle with cancer.

He was born in Dryden on May 3, 1931, son of Joseph and Sadie Rand.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley Rand; and his five children, Susan Rand, Catherine Rand, Thomas Rand, Peter Rand and Aaron Rand. He also had seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Carl was a graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology, with a master’s in electrical engineering, then became a master electrician. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during the Korean war, stationed at the Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines.

Carl and Shirley moved to Danville Junction in 1956, where they raised their five children and belonged to the Danville Union Church. He loved his family, community, snowmobiling, motorcycles, gardening, baking and making his world-famous biscuits. Friends, family and community were his life. No matter what time of night, if someone needed help, he came to their rescue.

Carl retired from Bates College working as a master electrician, heating, refrigeration technician.

Summers were spent in Bayside. Baysiders will remember Carl for his generosity, giving to all who needed his expertise. His green thumb was evident in the abundance of lush flowers on the Rand porch, as well as the vegetable garden he tended in summer. A dog’s best friend, he kept a treat box by his door and was even known to be a favorite among certain kitties as well. Children of all ages loved him. He made homemade ice cream on July 4, biscuits all the time and held gingerbread parties in the fall. Everyone was welcome on his porch.

A celebration of Carl’s life will take place at the Gardiner Elks, 148 Cobbossee Ave., Gardiner, from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 28.
