1922 – 2016

LEWISTON — Pearl “Midge” Wuori, 94, a former resident of Jay, died peacefully, Thursday, May 26, at Montello Manor in Lewiston, where she had been residing since 2013.

She was born April 15, 1922, at the home of her parents Joseph Franklin “Frankie” Burnham and Elnora “Nora” Sarah Wing in Livermore Falls. Christened Pearl Elnora Burnham, she got her nickname “Midge” the day she was born, when her maternal grandmother took one look at her and said “That’s a midget if I ever saw one.” She grew up in Livermore Falls and was educated in the Livermore Falls school system.

In August 1940, she married Henry Erlon Bryant of Jay, they had three children. While her husband was in the service during World War II she worked at Forster’s Toothpick Factory in Strong packing clothespins. He was killed in a tragic tractor accident 1952, after which she went back to work to support her family. She worked in the woolen mills in Lewiston, Wilton and Winthrop, a career she pursued for more than 30 years before retiring in 1984. In June 1959, she married Taisto “Ty” Felix Wuori of South Paris, and had one son.

During her childhood, Pearl was a member of the local 4-H, enjoyed roller skating at Bear Pond, going to the movies at the Dreamland Theatre with her friends, and always kept busy doing such odd jobs as babysitting, housekeeping and picking beans for the local cannery, all to earn money for her school clothes. During her working and retirement years, she enjoyed relaxing at camp, knitting, crocheting, listening to music and “playing the ponies.” She came out of retirement briefly in the 1990s to work as a cook at Franchetti’s Home Town Variety in Chisholm.

She is survived by her children, Henry Erlon Bryant Jr. and his companion, Jackie Fournier, of Jay, Blaine Edward Bryant and wife, Merilee, of Westbrook, Wayne Alan Wuori and wife, Lana, of North Carolina, Stanley Keith Wuori of Florida, Terrance Wuori and wife, Nancy, of Islesboro, and Marie (Wuori) Hatfield and husband, Peter, of Winthrop; by those thought of as daughters, Joline Coolidge and husband, Clinton, of Jay, and Donna (Brochu) Wuori of Jay; her grandchildren, Lewis Wuori and wife, Sandra, Juli Millett and husband, Michael, Heidi Conant and husband, Dennis, Gina Mitchell and husband, Paul, Tara Gallagher, James Bryant and wife, Katrina, Jessica Wuori and companion, Peter, Olan Wuori, Steffan Wuori, Katie Wuori and husband, Justin, Tracey Wuori, Erik Wuori and wife, Elizabeth, Kristan Hatfield and wife, Molly, Darren Hatfield and companion, Mary, and Marja Grillo and husband, Anthony; 28 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
