As a city councilor from Auburn, I want to express my strong opposition to the proposed merger of the cities of Auburn and Lewiston. It is a terrible idea that will have negative consequences, especially for Auburn.
Auburn was first settled in 1786 and was incorporated in 1842. The ancestors of many residents have lived here for many decades, even centuries. The joint commission formed to merge the cities is basically looking to wipe Auburn off the map. It would eliminate more than 200 years of history.
While there is a very good relationship with people across the river and have worked with them on many joint projects through the years, a formal consolidation would result in a complete loss of Auburn’s identity. What with the much larger population on the Lewiston side, Auburn would run the risk of being consistently out-voted on funding, taxes and other major issues. Auburn residents would be taking on the huge welfare and school problems found on the Lewiston side.
Auburn would be swallowed up by the much larger populated Lewiston.
Designated an “All-American City” in 1967, Auburn has been well managed for many years. The idea of consolidation was pushed by a small group from the Chamber of Commerce. There is no urgent or broad support for the cities to consolidate from the general public.
I strongly urge all citizens of Lewiston-Auburn to vote against consolidation in November.
