RANGELEY — Regional School Unit 78 directors and Superintendent Jay McIntire have come to a mutual agreement to go separate ways.

McIntire was expected to begin a three-year contract July 1 following the conclusion of a contract for a one-year interim superintendent position that expires June 30.

A severance agreement between the board and McIntire requires the school system to pay McIntire one year’s salary of $97,850, which will be paid over time with normal payroll practices.

Directors agreed to continue to contribute the school district’s share of McIntire’s health insurance until June 30, 2017, or when he obtains comparable coverage elsewhere. Directors also agreed to pay for health care benefits under COBRA for the months of July, August and September 2017.

Board Chairwoman Nancy Hilliard of Sandy River Plantation said the board decided May 26 to terminate a three-year contract it approved in January that had not gone into effect. They also accepted a severance agreement.

McIntire said a provision in the three-year contract allowed the two parties to terminate the agreement at any time if there was mutual agreement.

“Last week we decided to implement that provision,” McIntire said Friday via email.

RSU 78 had a productive year, he said.

“Most importantly, our students had an excellent year academically, in the arts, athletically and civically,” McIntire said.

Among the achievements this school year, voters approved a more than $5 million renovation to Rangeley Lakes Regional School; the district’s educator evaluation plan was approved by the state; the school board held regular retreats that have advanced its thinking about governance models, distributed leadership and standards-based education.

In addition, McIntire said, the board adopted a tight budget for the coming year that sustains programs and makes modest investments in school improvements while absorbing significant revenue reductions.

“It has been a pleasure serving the students, educators, board and the communities of Rangeley and the plantations of Dallas, Magalloway, Rangeley and Sandy River,” he said.
