NEW GLOUCESTER — Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village will host The Maine Festival of American Music: Its Roots and Traditions from Wednesday through Saturday, June 22 to 25. Event takes place in the Shakers’ 1794 Meeting House.

The festival provides a rare opportunity to appreciate Shakers within a wider context of classical and folk music while celebrating American musicians and composers.

The Portland String Quartet and soprano Luette Saul will perform on June 22. Featured will be works spanning three centuries, including Maine composer Supply Belcher’s “The Harmony of Maine,” Shaker Elder Joseph Brackett’s “Simple Gifts,” Tom Myron’s “Kathe Kollwitz,” and the late Beethoven Quartet Op. 132.

On June 23, composer Kevin Siegfried will lead the Portsmouth Singers in choral arrangements of Shaker tunes, with historical commentary by Brother Arnold Hadd.

On June 24, Chris Moore of 317 Main Community Music Center will perform modern folk songs inspired by original 19th century Shaker music and other deep-rooted American folk music traditions.

Franco-American fiddling and step-dancing by the Don Roy Trio will be featured the afternoon of June 25. Paralleling the Shakers’ tradition of song and dance, the trio will perform a variety of mid-19th century folk and fiddle music born and bred in Maine’s mill towns.

The Portland String Quartet will complement works by Mozart and Mendelssohn with “Lyric String Quartette” by Still and Dello Joio’s “Lyrical Interludes” the evening of June 25.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance online at www.maineshakers.com or by calling 207-926-4597.
