NEWRY — Residents voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to approve amendments to their Fire Department Ordinance and to settle a boundary issue at the Head of the Tide Cemetery by swapping land with a resident.

Deputy Town Clerk Kelly Scott said that residents voted 126-27 in favor of approving several amendments to their Fire Department Ordinance.

The amendments include:

• Changing the term of chief from two years to one year;

• Having one assistant chief instead of two; and

• Adding the position of captain.

Residents also voted 134-16 to allow the town to swap land with a resident to solve a boundary issue at the Head of Tide Cemetery.

A survey by the Cemetery Committee showed that some graves at the Head of Tide Cemetery are on Robert Cummings’ land. The land swap allowed the selectmen to swap an equal amount of land with Cummings to compensate for the boundary issue.

The cemetery is beside Route 26 in North Newry, near the Grafton Township line.
