LEWISTON — Lewiston Adult Education graduates were recently praised before getting their diplomas at commencement exercises in the Lewiston High School gym.
State Rep. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, served as guest speaker and encouraged graduates to consider post-secondary education. She said people in the community would support them just like the adult education faculty had done.
Several teachers spoke in the ceremony to note student accomplishments and their work ethic. A number of students attended four-hour classes after finishing 12-hour shifts.
Roxann Belle was the student speaker. She told of her journey from the Caribbean island of Barbados to Maine. She improved her math skills and worked on getting her high school equivalency through a series of adult education classes, including a New Mainers class.
“I have learned to adapt and adjust my life to things like driving on the other side of the road, learning new traffic signs, and keeping up with the four seasons, although it was more like two seasons, deep cold and somewhat cold,” Belle said.
She took time to name each of her instructors and explained the encouragement and support each one gave.
“So now, we will be moving on, and I wish to extend success and best wishes to all my fellow graduates in all that you strive to achieve,” Belle said. “To all our wonderful teachers, I send a warm and heartfelt thank you and I wish you all the best as you continue to impart your impeccable skills upon those who cross your paths.”
