1917 – 2016

LEWISTON —

, 99, died Wednesday, June 29, in Montello Manor in Lewiston after a period of declining health. Her husband, Wendell Penley Eggert, died in 1972.

Born in Auburn on March 11, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Howard D. and Ruth E. Marsh and the oldest of five children. She grew up in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School. As a young adult, she worked in sales at B. Peck Department Store and as a proofreader at the Sun Journal. She later moved to Massachusetts, living for many years in Wayland and retiring from Shawmut Bank at the age of 70. She returned to Auburn to live near family in 1992.

The joy of her life was her family and raising her children. Known as “Jean,” she sparkled every day with a bright smile and a twinkle in her eye. Always devoted to family and friends, she was quick to laugh and quick with her knitting needles. Her hand-knit supply of warm socks, hats and scarves always filled a large trunk with a rainbow of colors. Her family, her friends and her caregivers late in life appreciated her sweet spirit and her simple, joyful attitude toward life.

She is survived by her son, Norman E. Eggert and his wife, Cheryl, of Phillipston, Mass.; her daughter, Wendy J. Meade and husband, Daniel, of Norridgewock; her grandchildren, Daniel A. Meade IV and his wife, Winnie, of Loudenville, N.Y., Jonathan D. Meade of Richmond, Ind., Sarah J. Wood and her husband, Andrew, of Wenham, Mass., and Kimberly Lauren Eggert. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren; her sister, Ruth Ireland of Brunswick; her brother, David Marsh of Auburn; and her sister, Constance Brann and husband, James, of Auburn.

She was predeceased by her sister, Janice Fischer of Maine.
