NEW GLOUCESTER — Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village will offer a series of traditional craft workshops, educational nature walks and a yoga class in July at at 707 Shaker Road, Route 26.

Garlic Keeper Basketmaking: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23. In this half-day class, local basketmaker Carolyn Kemp will teach participants to form round reed into an open-weave basket, perfect for storing garlic, small items or for use as a decoration. The cost is $45. Preregistration is required. 

Herbal Green Cleaning Products Workshop: 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 23. Master gardener Betsey-Ann Golon will lead a make-and-take of several herbal cleaning products, using natural and household ingredients. Clean and sanitize your home with with affordable eco-friendly products made in the half-day workshop. The cost is $50. This workshop may be combined with Garlic Keeper Basketmaking for a full day of learning new skills. Preregistration is required. 

Quilted Santa Runner: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23. Local expert seamstress Dianne Devonshire will teach participants the basics of quilting, including precisely matched corners, angles, and seams in this fun Christmas-in-July table runner. This is an excellent class for beginners and new quilters age 12 and older. The cost is $80, and preregistration is required. 

Beginner’s Woodcarving — Colt: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23. Local award-winning master carver Norm Devonshire will lead a workshop in which participants will complete their own finished wood carving of a small horse. This workshop is for ages 14 and older, and no prior carving experience is necessary. The cost is $50. Preregistration is required. 

Nature’s Outdoor Classroom: 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, July 23, with check-in at the Museum Visitors’ Center. Resident naturalist Carolyn Fensore will lead a 2½-hour hike through the Shakers’ 1,800 acres of diversified habitats while identifying and explaining flora, fauna, geological formations and Shaker history along the way. Hikers will see evidence of glacial and geological forces that formed the land and watershed, including Sabbathday Lake’s Loon’s Point and the hidden treasure of Aurelia’s Cascade. Shaker Village nature walks are free, and reservations for the nature walk are suggested, but not required.

Gentle Flow Yoga: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30. This class, led by Sue Faunce of Gingko Leaf Yoga, is great for beginners or those with experience that would like a more gentle, relaxing, and meditative movement at peaceful Shaker Village. The cost is $10 per person; preregistration is required.
