FREEPORT — Circus Smirkus’ Big Top Tour will stop in Freeport on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 2 and 3.

Performances are at 1 and 6 p.m. at the Maine Coast Waldorf School on Desert Road.

The tour has a 30-member cast, all budding circus stars ages 11 to 18, hailing from 15 states. One of them is Sarah Norden, a Maine Coast Waldorf High School senior from Yarmouth.

Norden will perform with Circus Smirkus as a clown and aerialist. She became hooked on circus arts at a young age while attending Circus Smirkus summer camp. She began training with the circus arts teacher, John Saccone, at Maine Coast Waldorf School and later at many venues throughout New England.

Norden continued to perfect her craft by attending nightly classes at Circus Maine on Thompsons Point in Portland. This year she auditioned in Brattleboro, Vt., and earned a spot on the troupe for her second year.

This year’s theme is Up, HUP and Away: The Invention of Flight! It features aerials, acrobatics, wire walking, juggling, clowning, live music and an array of costumes.

Now in its 29th year, the Vermont-based organization has raised more than $2.5 million for nonprofit partners. The local circus performances are a fundraiser for Maine Coast Waldorf School in Freeport. The school first brought Circus Smirkus to Freeport in 2005 as a fundraiser and outreach event. Within a few years the Magic Matinee Program began, making it possible for hundreds of low-income and underserved families to attend performances.

Tickets are $21 for adults, $18 for seniors and children ages 2 to 12. Children younger than 2 are free on an adult’s lap. Tickets may be purchased by calling 1-877-SMIRKUS or by visiting www.smirkus.org.
