1940 – 2016

WALES — Alice R. Benziger passed away peacefully Saturday evening, July 9, with her husband and children gathered around her.

Alice, the daughter of Lester and Myrtle Brooks, was born in Milldale, Conn., on Sept. 2, 1940, moving to Meriden, Conn., at a very young age where she attended school and spent her youth.

Alice’s husband, Fred, was introduced to her and was instantly smitten, wooing and eventually wedding her on Oct. 26, 1963, and together went on to raise their four children; Susan, Eric, Kurt and Karl.

In September 1971, the family left Connecticut and relocated to Lisbon Falls. They owned and operated Mario’s Restaurant for more than 30 years, retiring in 2005. Alice always took great pride and care with everything she prepared, and it showed in the many compliments she would always receive from patrons. She ran a tight ship and instilled her strong work ethic in the restaurant’s young employees. Many of them over the years thanked her for that — telling her how it had benefitted them throughout the years.

Alice was always a giver and enjoyed seeing people happy. Her kindness, sweetness and willingness to help others are only a few of the many wonderful traits she had that endeared her to her soul mate. In 2014, Fred and Alice moved to Florida. While there, Alice was diagnosed with lung cancer which ultimately took her life. We are going to really miss her a lot.

Fred wishes to thank Eric and Tammy for urging them to stay at their home in Wales, as it has made things much more pleasant for Alice. Fred would also like to thank Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their empathy, compassion and professionalism. They made Alice’s passing comfortable for both Alice and the family. “You’re the Best.”
