1922 – 2016

LEWISTON — Verna Nuzzo Hobart, 93, a longtime resident of Litchfield, died Tuesday, July 19, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Dec. 23, 1922, in Litchfield, the daughter of George S. Smith and Ethel Thompson Smith. She was a graduate of Litchfield Academy. She married Harold Nuzzo in 1941; he passed away on March 16, 1988. On Nov. 18, 1988, in Litchfield, she married Richard Hobart; he passed away Jan. 18, 2012. Verna worked throughout the years as a housekeeper and cafeteria worker at the Oak Hill High School.

Verna’s love for life was founded in her love of her church family at the Litchfield Plains Church, her singing with the Litchfield Senior Center Carol String Band and the enjoyment she found at her home on Tocoma Lake. Her family and friends meant everything to her. Through the grace of God, she was able to live in her home, drive her car and care for her beloved cat, Angel, well into the age of 93. Until this summer, she could be found on her old John Deere tractor mowing her lawn, a chore some found to be anything but fun, but she found it to be a sheer joy.

She is survived by three sons, Kenneth Nuzzo and his wife, Eileen, of Winthrop, Keith Nuzzo and his wife, Andrea, of Litchfield, and Karl Nuzzo and his wife, Maureen, of Litchfield; her grandchildren, Jason Nuzzo, of Washington, D.C., Morgan Nuzzo and husband, Chris Hopkins, also of Washington, D.C., Anthony Nuzzo of Portland, and Hillarie Holbrook and her husband, Dylan, of Walden, Vt.; and great-grandchildren, Porter and Logan Nuzzo.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husbands; and her brother, Raymond Marston.
