NEWRY — The Board of Selectmen said Tuesday evening that it would allow the Telstar Area Youth Football team to submit a written request for a $300 donation.

However, Selectman Jim Largess said he wanted the letter to state that donation requests should be done through the town meeting process so residents have a chance to vote on them.

“If we didn’t do it the way we do it, we’d have multiple requests coming in every other week,” Largess said to the rest of the board.

Town Administrator Amy Bernard said the town had voted to grant the Telstar football team $300 in 2015, and that the team was seeking the same donation this year.

“It’s really hard to say no to these organizations that serve our kids, like the Boy and Girl Scouts and sports teams,” Largess said. “They’re great organizations. I just want to make sure they go through the proper channels next time.”

Near the end of the meeting, Largess suggested that the board draft a letter to the Telstar Football team, asking it to submit a formal written request for the money to be donated.

“After we get the request in written form, we can send them a letter letting them know that we can donate the money this year, but from now on, it will have to go through the town meeting process,” Largess said.
