NORWAY — Country music in Oxford Hills is getting a new home, giving residents something new to tune in to: interviews with local politicians.

Radio station WOXO, which broadcasts sports and music in a 160-mile radius around Greenwood, is switching frequencies from 92.7 FM to 96.9 FM starting Aug. 1, station president Dick Gleason said.

Taking its place at 92.7 FM will be Maine’s Big Z, which will continue to broadcast from 105.5 FM.

WOXO will still be heard at 100.7 FM in Rumford.

WOXO began broadcasting in 1970 on a different frequency, but changed a few years later. In the years since, Gleason has expanded the number of stations he operates to seven, which cover Western and Central Maine.

The change will expand the Lewiston-Auburn-based station’s programming into Oxford Hills, giving residents more options, Gleason said.

The station plays a mix of hits from the past 30 years, and is hoping personality-driven shows such as the Breakfast Club, where hosts interview local politicians and town employees, will appeal to Oxford County residents.

Past guests on the Breakfast Club have included Gov. Paul LePage and 2nd District U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin.

This week’s guest list includes Auburn’s police chief and members of the Recreation Department. Gleason said he hopes to see Oxford County public officials on the program soon. He said it was his “dream” to expand issue-orientated radio.

“There are local issues in our society that can be addressed,” he said.
