FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners accepted a bid of $163,413.33 Tuesday to provide medical services at the Franklin County Detention Center.

Medpro Associates of Dover-Foxcroft will provide seven-day coverage for one year with monthly payments of $13,617.78, Terry Thurlow, health services administrator for Medpro, told commissioners.

The contract provides for a potential extension of the service for two more years with a 2 percent increase for wages figured in for each year, he said.

Medpro Associates has provided medical coverage at the jail this past year for $133,900 but for only five days a week. Extra funding was sometimes necessary to cover the remaining two days.

The new contract provides for coverage from three local nurses, two registered nurses and one licensed practical nurse, Thurlow said. There is also an on-call nurse available seven nights a week.

The service retains a doctor who is on call along with a nurse practitioner and two physician assistants to provide four hours of weekly coverage for sick calls, physical exams, treatment referrals and on-call services.

Any equipment purchased by Medpro for use at the jail will remain at the jail and become the detention center’s property, he said. An amount was figured into the contract to cover the equipment, along with administrative costs for the service.

Medpro Associates was the only bid received from advertising for services.

Although the bid was accepted, Commissioner Gary McGrane asked for time to read the contract. Thurlow agreed.
