EAST SUMNER — A Beanhole Bean supper will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Congregational Church of East Sumner, 50 Main Street, Route 219, in East Sumner village.

HARRISON — Labor Day and fall are right around the corner.  Plan to bring your family, neighbors and weekend guests to the public buffet breakfast at the United Parish, which is located at 77 Main Street in Harrison, right across from Crystal Lake Park, on Saturday, Sept. 3, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. 

The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, home fries, sausage, fresh fruit, homemade coffee cake, muffins, coffee, tea, and juice.  Donations are gratefully accepted.  Hope to see you there.

Supper

NORTH WATERFORD — This summer’s last public supper at the North Waterford Church, Route 5, opposite Melby’s Eatery, will be held Tuesday, Aug. 30 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The menu includes all-you can eat casseroles, baked beans, salads, and homemade desserts. This year for the first time…eat in air-conditioned comfort! Cost is $9 for adults and $4.50 for children. All are welcome! Don’t miss it!

Yard sales

OXFORD — The Oxford Advent Christian Church will have its annual yard sale from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26 and 27, on Route 26. 

All proceeds from the sale will go toward the church’s missions.

NORWAY — A yard sale will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 35 Paris St. in Norway.

There will be a large selection of household items, jewelry and china, as well as lots of books – something for everyone! Come enjoy breakfast and lunch for a small fee.

NORWAY — The Second Congregational Church of Norway will hold its 17th annual Tent-N-Treasures yard sale on Saturday, Aug. 27. There will be no “early birds” or “previews” allowed before the sale, which runs from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sid Hollowell, yard sale barn coordinator says, “We look forward to a very large crowd. If you haven’t been before, don’t miss it!” The rain or shine sale, under 10 tents, will fill the church parking lot to overflowing.

Hot dogs and soda will be on sale after 10:30 a.m.

The revenue from the yard sale will used to support the many missions of the Second Congregational Church, United Church of Christ.

Seeking crafters

AUBURN — The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit #31 is hosting the 5th annual Annual Craft and Vendor Fair, to be held at the Alden M. Gayton Legion Post at 426 Washington Street North, Auburn from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29. Six-foot tables will be rented at a cost of $15 without electricity and $20 with electricity. Tables are rented on a first­-come basis.

Coffee and doughnuts will be provided to vendors and lunch items – burgers, hot dogs and drinks – will be available for purchase for lunch. The fair is open to the public.

AREA — A Western Maine Recovery Rally will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., from the First Universalist Church in Norway to Moore Park in South Paris.

Dance

PARIS — On Wednesdays beginning Sept. 7, from 6:30-7:45 p.m., Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club is sponsoring square dance lessons for beginners in the cafeteria of the Oxford Hills Middle School, 100 Pine St. in South Paris as part of the Oxford Hills/Buckfield Adult Education program.

The fee is $45 for 15 lessons or $4 each week for 15 weeks. Ray Hilton, club caller, will teach the lessons. Experienced dancers will join in to assist the newcomers. Singles, couples, families and those looking for a refresher will find this to be a fun experience, good exercise and a very friendly atmosphere. Everyone is encouraged to give it a try.

The first dance of the 2016-2017 season will be Sept. 10 from 7-10 p.m. at the Oxford Hills Middle School with Walter Lougee, square dance caller, and Carol Arsenault, round dance cuer. Non-dancers are welcome to watch at no charge. The charge for dancing is $7 per person. There will be door prizes, 50/50 drawing and refreshments at intermission.

Texas Hold’em

HARRISON — The Harrison Lions Club will be holding their Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the VFW Hall on Waterford Road in Harrison.

There will be an $80 entry fee. Doors open at 12 p.m. with starting time at 1 p.m. This is a BYOB event with great food and refreshments available. The proceeds will be used to help support local children programs such as eye screening for school age children, Christmas for Kids, and scholarships. Remember, you can not win if you don’t play!

Speaking Up 

KINGFIELD — Speaking Up for Us of Maine, a statewide self-advocacy organization for people living with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, will host its annual statewide conference Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 20 and 21, at Sugarloaf Mountain Resort.

The conference provides an opportunity to meet others with disabilities for those who are not members.

This year’s theme is Health and Fitness, and there will be a variety of workshops and events designed to get the heart pumping, the body moving, and the brain learning about living a healthier lifestyle.

CNA class 

PARIS — Oxford Hills/Buckfield Adult Education is accepting registration for its CNA training class that will begin Monday, Sept. 26.

This is the only CNA class that will be offered this year; there will not be a class in the spring.

Mud run

OXFORD — The fourth annual Warrior Salute mud run will be held on Aug. 27 at Oxford Mud Runs. There will be prizes, raffles, mud runs, a rock-crawling course and show and shine. The event will be held rain or shine.

Teen center 

OXFORD — The Rock House Teen Center set a date of Aug. 26 to reopen the Friday night ministry from 6 to 9 p.m. at 254 Webber Brook Road.

The center closed temporarily on May 13 due to lack of funding and volunteers. 

The center is free of charge to teens aged 11 to 18 who’d like take part in activities.
