LEWISTON — A fire broke out at an apartment building in Lewiston on Saturday morning.

The owner of the three-story building at 213 Webster St., who did not want to be identified, told the Sun Journal that the fire started on a stove in a unit on the ground floor.

Lewiston Fire Investigator Paul Ouellette said it appears one tenant squeezed past the stove on her way out the door, accidentally turning on one of the stovetop eyes. She was on her way to do laundry and did not realize what had happened.

“The landlord said that it had happened before, that people had accidentally turned on the stove,” Ouellette said.

The hot stove top ignited a wooden dish rack that was nearby, and that fire spread to the rest of the kitchen.

A driver noticed flames in the window of the kitchen and notified Lewiston-Auburn 911 at 5:57 a.m.

Ouellette said a second tenant was at work when the fire started. Nobody else was home, but a family dog was killed in the fire, he said.

Ouellette said he is continuing to investigate the exact cause of the fire.
