1944 – 2016

AUBURN — John F. Eliot Sr. passed on to be with his savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, Sept. 8, at the age of 72, at his residence in Auburn surrounded by his wife and children.

John was born in Brunswick on Aug. 7, 1944, to Robert Eliot and Martha Pooler of Dexter.

He was a member of the first graduating class from Oxford Hills High School in 1962. After he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, he went on to work as an airframe fabricator at Sikorsky Aircrafts in Connecticut. In 1972, he relocated to his hometown of Norway with his family and was employed by Central Maine Power. John and his family moved to Bethel in 1980, where he was the local representative with CMP, until he retired. He then enjoyed traveling through his work as a district sales manager with BJ’s Wholesale Club, where he eventually settled in Auburn.

John met and married Ruth Lawler, with whom he shared his last 17 years. His favorite part of the day was waking and feeding the wildlife in their yard. In retirement, he also enjoyed traveling to visit friends by train, traveling to Florida with Ruth, and attending the sports activities of his grandchildren.

John’s hobbies included attending horse races and local fairs throughout his life. John was a member of the East Auburn Baptist Church.

John is survived by Ruth, his wife of 17 years; children, Denise Eliot-Pruett and her husband Jonathan, John F. Eliot Jr. and his wife, Tania, and Dawn Marie Eliot-Johnson and her husband, Christopher; Cheryl Burnham, mother of his children; stepchildren, Jody Provencher, James Berube, Scott Berube and Kelley LaBonte; grandchildren, Dustin Eliot Edwards, Joshua Eliot, Jonny Eliot Pruett, Makenzie Eliot; and his Dalmatian grand-dogs; seven step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; granddaughter Gabrielle; and beloved dogs.
