LIVERMORE FALLS — Spruce Mountain High School Principal T.J. Plourde and the other administrators on Thursday gave the RSU 73 board updates on what is happening in schools.

At Spruce Mountain High School in Jay, one activity scheduled this year is a craft fair to benefit the junior class.

On Sept. 13 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., an open house will be held at Spruce Mountain Middle School, also in Jay.

Spruce Mountain Elementary School Principal Chris Hollingsworth said training was done for elementary and primary school teachers to implement a test to determine student reading levels.

A restructuring of schools took place before the start of the school year. Now, pre-kindergarten to grade two pupils attend Spruce Mountain Primary School in Livermore, while grades three to five go to Spruce Mountain Elementary School in Jay.

Previously, both schools housed pre-kindergarten to grade five. The change has meant that playground equipment at the Primary School was adjusted for younger children, Primary School Principal Kevin Harrington said.

Middle School Principal Scott Albert said there won’t be a girls’ or boys’ soccer team at the middle school this fall because they weren’t able to find coaches.

Board Chairman Denise Rodzen reminded members that if someone from the community contacts them looking for information about the schools, “Your jobs are to direct them to the correct individual associated with the school system.”

She said if board members attempt to answer the questions themselves, people won’t feel like they have to follow the proper chain of command to get information. Additionally, she said, if a school board member gave misinformation or a wrong answer to a member of the public, that person would hold them accountable and it would undermine the school board.
