LITCHFIELD — Police said a driver who was drunk and potentially texting took out two utility poles that led to an hourslong power outage for more than 1,000 homes on Saturday.

Kennebec County Sheriff Ryan Reardon said in a news release Monday that Aaron Cowan, 30, of Litchfield went off Huntington Hill Road at 12:45 a.m.

One pole was destroyed, one was damaged and it was unclear whether a male passenger who was injured in the crash was ejected from the car, police said.

The unidentified passenger was taken to the hospital complaining of pain.

Reardon said Cowan was charged with operating under the influence after he tested nearly three times the legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.8 percent.

Central Maine Power restored electrical service just before 9 a.m. to 1,060 customers in Bowdoin, Litchfield, Monmouth and Wales.
