UPDATE: Downtown fire: ‘Close-knit’ residents helped others to safety

LEWISTON (AP) — Fire companies from several Maine towns responded to battle a three-alarm blaze that broke out at an apartment building in Lewiston.

Initial reports of the fire at the Oak Street residence were called in just after 11 p.m. Sunday. Crews from Auburn, Lisbon, Mechanic Falls, Sabattus and Topsham provided aid to Lewiston firefighters at the scene.

Fire officials say the flames were knocked down by approximately 3:30 a.m. Monday. No injuries were reported.

It’s unclear how many residents were inside the building when the fire started. Members of the Red Cross are assisting residents from six units at the scene.

The extent of the damage to the structure is currently unknown. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
