FARMINGTON —  Police said an Augusta man was arrested Monday for choking a Farmington woman by hand and with a belt until she blacked out.

Erik Cook, 21, faces charges of aggravated assault and obstructing the reporting of a crime, according to police.

The incident occurred Sept. 13 on the New Vineyard Road, Police Chief Jack Peck said.

The victim, a 25-year old woman, was picked up by a friend and taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. She reported the incident Friday. The extent of her injuries and the reason she was taken to MMC were unavailable, he said.

She told police that Cook chased her into the kitchen, knocked her to the floor and choked her until she turned purple. She tried to call 911 but he blocked the Wi-Fi, and she couldn’ t make a phone call, Peck said.

More details about the incident and whether they were in a relationship were unavailable, he said.

Following an investigation, Sgt. Michael Adcock located Cook in Augusta on Monday and interviewed him before arresting him on the charges.

Cook was taken to Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington.
