FARMINGTON — “Powered by Girl” author Lyn Mikel Brown will give a talk and book-signing at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at Devaney Doak & Garrett Booksellers, 193 Broadway.

In “Powered by Girl,” readers learn about the intergenerational support behind 13-year-old Julia Bluhm when she got Seventeen magazine to go Photoshop-free; 19-year-old Celeste Montaño, who pressed Google to diversify its Doodles; and 16-year-old Yas Necati, who campaigns for better sex education.

Brown, a professor at Colby College, has been studying the empowerment of girls for more than 25 years. She’s the author of five other books about gender and girlhood, including “Meeting at the Crossroads” and “Packaging Girlhood.” She’s the co-founder of three grassroots organizations, including Hardy Girls Healthy Women.
