PORTLAND — A Gray man who was driving erratically and without a license when he crashed last year, killing a 4-year-old passenger, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Michael Minson was sentenced Wednesday to 4½ years behind bars for the Casco crash that killed Cameron Peterson and seriously injured his mother in August 2015.

Minson apologized in court and says he made an awful, careless choice.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Minson was driving a Honda Civic west at around 5:55 a.m. when he lost control of the Civic after it passed another vehicle, crossed the centerline, left the road, struck a utility pole and split it in two.

Minson and the boy’s mother, Crystal Peterson, 27, also of Gray, were seriously injured in the crash. Minson was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to a news release.

Peterson suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Bridgton Hospital, then to Maine Medical Center.

The Portland Press Herald reports Minson exceeded the 50 mph speed limit, but they didn’t specify by how much.
